Ingredients
- 2 cups of versatile all-purpose flour
- 1 ½ tablespoons of fragrant dried basil, split as desired
- 2 teaspoons of baking powder for that perfect rise
- 2 ¼ teaspoons of salt, divided to suit your taste
- ½ teaspoon of spicy cayenne pepper for a kick
- ½ cup of creamy butter
- ½ cup of milk, or adjust as necessary
- ⅓ teaspoon of flavorful pesto
- 4 tablespoons of rich butter
Step 1
Begin by preheating your oven to a toasty 450 degrees Fahrenheit (around 230 degrees Celsius) for that perfect bake.
Step 2
In a mixing bowl, combine flour, a tablespoon of fresh basil, baking powder, a couple of teaspoons of salt, and a dash of cayenne pepper. Use a fork to cut in half a cup of butter until the mixture looks like coarse crumbs. Slowly pour in milk, working it into the dough gradually. Don't forget to add a dollop of pesto for that extra kick!
Step 3
Let the dough rest in the fridge for approximately 15 minutes to firm up.
Step 4
After chilling, transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead until it's smooth and no longer sticky. Roll it out to your preferred thickness and cut out 12 lovely biscuits using a circular cookie cutter. Arrange them on a baking sheet and brush the tops with a smidgen of butter. Sprinkle some more dried basil and salt on top for added flavor.
Step 5
Pop the baking sheet into the preheated oven and bake until the biscuits turn a beautiful golden hue, which should take about 15 minutes. For an even bake, flip them over halfway through, around the 10-minute mark, allowing the tops to brown nicely as well.
Extra Tips & Suggestions
- 1. Keep your savory basil biscuits in an airtight container to maintain their freshness and prevent them from becoming stale.
- 2. Store the biscuits in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to preserve their flavor and texture.
